Big Change for VWP Travelers: Registration with ESTA Required Before Entering the US
Before entering the United States, Visa Waiver Program Travelers must first obtain travel authorization under the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). DHS encourages applicants to do this prior to booking travel to the U.S. ESTA registration is completed at http://esta.cbp.dhs.gov. The applicant enters basic biographic information into the system which is run through the DHS database.
In most cases, the response will be received immediately however DHS includes that some cases may take up to seventy two hours. Approved applications will state: “Authorization approved”. “Travel not Authorized” means the person is not eligible to travel on the VWP. This denial means that the DHS records indicate a prior immigration violation which renders the person ineligible to enter the United States without first obtaining a visa. Those denied must therefore obtain a travel visa from the U.S. Consulate in their home country and then may apply for entry to the U.S.
The approved ESTA is generally valid for up to two years or until the applicant’s passport expires. However the travel permission may be revoked prior if DHS feels there has been an immigration violation. The approval is valid for multiple entries however is not a guarantee that the applicant will be granted entry to the United States.
